Aromatherapy A-Z

A is for Adhesions:

Adhesions are scar-like tissue that forms after abdominal surgery and wraps around internal organs, causing pain, infertility, bowel obstruction and other problems. The phenomenon is "huge". Up to 94 per cent of patients develop adhesions after abdominal surgery." CranioSacral Therapy gently releases the connective tissue to resolve & avoid adhesions, especially when begun within days of surgery. Until better surgical procedures come about, there are ways to minimize complications & pain.

B is for Burns:

Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, who coined the word 'Aromatherapie' & initiated the revival of interest in essential oils, began his research after he had burnt his hand in a laboratory explosion & experienced for himself how dramatically Lavender oil helped it heal. Lavender is a very effective antiseptic, analgesic & promotes rapid healing, often healing burns with no scars at all.

C is for Coumarins:

Coumarins are a group of aromatic molecules that are not very volatile, so they are not easily extracted by distillaton. They are found mainly in citrus oils, which are extracted by simple pressure. Coumarins are sedative, antispasmodic & anticonvulsive. A subgroup called Furocoumarins can cause photosensitisation of the skin, and so must be used with care.

D is for Disinfectant:

D is for Disinfectant - All essential oils will either kill or inhibit bacteria & viruses to a certain extent, some very much more powerful than chemical disinfectants. Among the most useful are Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Juniper, Lavender, Ti-Tree (& other oils in the melaleuca family: Cajuput, Niaouli), Thyme. Use to disinfect rooms, washable surfaces & use in the air for treatment and prevention.
